The film showcases the crucial role these women play in safeguarding the mangroves of Puntarenas. Moreover, the initiative has reached many communities across Costa Rica and received international recognition. As a result, Astrid Peraza Greentalist continues to inspire people everywhere to protect and restore these vital ecosystems.

Champion for Mangroves

Astrid Peraza Greentalist has focused her activism on mangrove protection. In 2024, the United Nations recognized her as one of the Heroes of the Earth. She became the first Central American to receive this distinction for her remarkable environmental leadership.

Through her project Mujeres del Manglar (Women of the Mangrove), Astrid worked with Mudecop, a rural women’s association, to produce a documentary. The film highlights the vital role of these women in protecting the mangroves of Puntarenas. Furthermore, the initiative has reached several communities across Costa Rica and gained international recognition. Global Voice

Astrid also founded her own organization, Verde Mar, which actively promotes education, mangrove restoration, and community empowerment to protect Costa Rica’s coastal ecosystems.

Currently, she is participating in the UN COP16 on Desertification, held in Saudi Arabia from December 2–13, 2024. During the event, she will lead one of the discussion panels. Additionally, she frequently reminds others that the Earth is our skin and that we must protect it from threats such as the overuse of agrochemicals.

Moreover, Astrid views spaces like COP as key opportunities for youth participation. In these forums, young people can propose solutions, build networks, and gain recognition as changemakers. Furthermore, these experiences empower them to take action and make a real difference.

Looking Ahead

From Sociedad Greentalist, we proudly wish Astrid Peraza Greentalist continued success in all her projects. She actively represents Costa Rica and Latin American youth in key global debates on land restoration, drought resilience, and sustainable soil and water management. Moreover, her passion and leadership continue to inspire others to protect the planet. Without a doubt, Astrid Peraza Greentalist will keep building a meaningful legacy that motivates future generations to take bold action for the environment.
